How to Get a Clear Renovation Quotation in Malaysia

A clear renovation quotation lists the scope of work, the materials, the price for each part, the schedule, the payment stages and the warranty. Give every contractor the same written brief so the quotations can be compared fairly.
Start With a Written Brief
- Write down what you want done, room by room. Add rough measurements, photos of the current space and any finishes or brands you prefer.
- Sending the same brief to two or three contractors is the simplest way to get quotations you can compare.
What a Good Quotation Includes
- The scope of work, described clearly enough that you can tell what is and is not included.
- Materials and brands, or a clear allowance if you will choose them later.
- A price for each part of the work rather than one lump sum.
- The expected start date, duration and the stages of work.
- Payment stages tied to progress, and the warranty on workmanship.
Questions to Ask Before You Agree
- Who will do the work: the contractor, or sub-contractors, and who supervises them?
- What happens if you change your mind about something halfway?
- Who applies for management approval and handles waste disposal in a condominium?
- Is there a written warranty, and how do you claim on it?
Keep Everything in Writing
Confirm the final scope, price, schedule and payment stages in a message or document both sides keep. Changes should be written down and agreed before the extra work starts.
